Torai-san who has been taking care of my hair since I moved to Kyoto is a man of unique magnetism. Occupationally he is a hair stylist, but he seems to be more into shooting photographs, traveling, and children.
Accordingly the first hair salon of his had a 'home' atmosphere. It is functionally a place to cut hair, but is not served only for it. The clients can truly get relaxed there with him.
One day Torai-san told me about his plan to start another hair salon.
I was happy for him, and thought I could do something in architecture to celebrate his challenge. However, I also knew it wouldn't be the one like a skyrocket which appeals nothing but newness.
As friends know better what really is attractive about someone than himself, good design translates one' s character better so that the space is more convincing and trustworthy to strangers. With this sustainability, I wished his business works for good, and my design would do some help for that.
Once the design had been launched, Torai-san picked up keywords for his salon and gave them to me.
- a bit distorted glass
- wooden flooring with a creak
- materiality of iron contrast to wood
- fluffy chairs
- unforgettable colors
Specific items have power because they carry reality with them.
As Yumi Matsutoya, a singer and songwriter, creates music of a tangible and memorable world with specific items in her songs, I believed I could apply this design strategy to architecture.
For instance, in her song 'Surrounded by tenderness,' she captured the abstract situation with lyrics of 'surrounded by tenderness' in 'the smell of cape jasmines' at 'the garden after rain.' The scenery in your mind should be more powerful and alive. It is coming up to you, but never annoys you without redundant explanation. This is why her music will stay with you throughout your lifetime.
As I tried to be keen to architectural rhythm and scales in designing, integrating fragmented items into one world, I sensed that the space surely owns reality and fantasy.
It became a tactile space inherited presence of specific individual.
Through this space, we can make a decision on such private and habitual affair as whether or not we wish to let our hair cut by someone we don't know yet.
Thus finalized space reminds us of scenery from picture books in the childhood, or from trips to foreign countries. Above all, I was very happy by the fact that the atmosphere of Torai-san is certainly felt at the space whenever he is there or not.
